Birth of Bamboo...

Opening its doors in July 2014, Phong Nha Bamboo Cafe is owned by local couple Hải & Vâng, setting up Phong Nha's first European-style service restaurant, producing local food made by local people. In just a few short years, Phong Nha has quickly become a popular destination among young adventure-seekers and couples. But even so, there was still no appointed, casual dining experience for visitors to relax with a coffee, take in the atmosphere and sample local foods during their stay in Phong Nha. That's when the idea for Bamboo Café was born and Hải and Vâng began growing their small, cosy restaurant into the most popular and best-loved in the region.

Both Hải and Vâng were instrumental in paving the way for international tourism in this hidden, breathtaking corner of Vietnam; home to the 1st, 2nd and 4th largest caves in the world and hundreds of others. Speaking excellent English himself, Hải has a keen understanding of western cuisine and food service. This allowed him to create the atmosphere and signature dishes that make Bamboo so popular with foreign visitors and many locals.

Having worked for 8 years in Phong Nha Kẻ Bàng National park as a conservationist, Hải realises the importance of preserving the natural ecosystem and giving back to the community - all of our staff are 100% local, trained by Hải himself, giving the best restaurant experience in Phong Nha. True to his jungle expertise, Hải operates eco-tours to the local botanical gardens and wildlife centre, giving visitors a chance to experience and learn about the forest but also about the conservation efforts around Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng that is not only fascinating and enjoyable but also supports local jobs and the jungle ecosystem. This attitude is at the heart of Hải's approach to tourism - Hải's vision for Phong Nha is to boost tourism in the region but to do so sustainably and in sync with the environment.

A passion for good, locally-produced food led to the creation of Bamboo's very own cooking course where visitors can cook and prepare the local specialties for which the restaurant is now renowned. Both Hải and Vâng believe an authentic experience of local culture is to cook as the locals do and allow visitors to come away from Phong Nha with not just a memory, but also a taste.

If you are in Phong Nha, or are visiting in the near future, come by and say hello! Experience Hospitality the Vietnamese way!
